Exercise 1
Objective
The objective of this assignment is to shoot a minimum of 60 images of several metal objects. This exercise will emphasize the quality and strength of the metal. The composition and lighting must be focused upon.
Approach to meet objective
It is important to keep in mind all the different camera angles. The product for the first several images are some metal tools such as screws. The background is a plain white paper board. Lighting for this assignment is the Neewer 5600K USB Light with color filters. This would provide low angle shots. Also, the camera and the metal objects must take into account the reflective surfaces. The camera, Canon ELPH 350 HS, has shutter set to 1/2000 -15 sec and max aperture of 3.6. It has 12x optical zoom lens along with maximum ISO 3200.
The lighting will be approximately a foot away from the subject. A separate white foam board will be present in order to bounce light of the metal object. This will give a reflection on the object and create a more dramatic effect.
For this set up, I used maximum power for the table light. The objects were clearly defined and light bounced off on both sides. Shadows were also well defined and the words on the objects were more clear. The light to the left was set at mid power. When using only one light, the background became much dimmer surrounding the object. While zooming in on the metal object, the focus of the lens would appear blurry. I was able to solve this problem by lightly holding capture button for a few seconds to auto focus.
Image 27593872 is a great shot in terms of shadow and lights. The metal ridges can be seen clearly, as well as the markings on the top. The smaller tool has a reflection of the larger object. Overall, the composition is balanced and slightly above center.
Summary
Overall, this assignment went well while making some camera adjustments. Some shots proved difficult for extreme close ups as the object appeared distorted at times. I could experiment more with different color lighting or even a ring light. As my first assignment, I learned placing objects off center to get a more dynamic shot.
For the most part good. You do have a percentage that are out of focus. Any idea as to what you can do to improve this? Consider using a bounce card to bring out highlights (Ex on image # 27593200_Unknown) the silverware looks black, use of a white card at the correct reflective angle could improve the look. We can discuss more when we next meet.
