Exercise 2
Objective
The objective is to shoot 60 - 80 images of glass objects and liquid. The liquid can be static or in motion. The pour and splash are two categories of liquid in motion.
It's important to do a test shot before an actual shot. The camera that I'm using has portrait mode and creative shot mode. The creative shot mode allows for multiple versions of a single shot. Lighting for this exercise will be the same as the first exercise. The lighting will be placed in front of the glass object at 1/2 power. Other color lighting will be experimented with.
While taking photos of the glass, it was difficult to get most of the reflections from the surrounding light off the shots. The liquid added more reflections as well.
This photo was among the best ones that I took. The details of the liquid droplets cover the entire glass. There is minimal reflection from outside light sources. Camera was set to ISO 3200, f/10, 1/1200 sec.
Overall, most of the photos turned out well. The lighting and composition needs to be improved on. I found more success for shots where lighting was projected from directly above the object. I constantly moved the lighting around in order to eliminate shadow and small reflections. Some shots were made without the use of a tripod. For future assignments, I will use the same techniques to filter lighting. Covering the lighting with a napkin helped adjust the reflections.
So how would you improve upon the lighting? Don't always cover the light source with a napkin.. try it with and without. Also consider use of wax paper and parchment paper. You ISO is set soo high, bring it down. This will also allow to bring down the shutter speed as possibly open up the f/stop for other looks. Did you try other backdrops? Black? Other materials with a shallow DoF? Also, consider moving your object further away from the backdrop. this will help to eliminate some of the shadows.
