Exercise 5

 Objective

The objective for this assignment is shoot 30 images of jewelry products and 30 objects of collectables to promote the quality of the object/product.  The shoot must be creative with lighting and composition.  The products should be shot at more dynamic angles.  5600 usb light with some filters will be mostly held by hand.  The camera should be placed on the tripod to prevent shaking.  Also, the background should have variety along with any additional accessories.

Double sided tape helped prop up the ring for the shoot.  The ring stood horizontally and was able to get interesting angles.  The preparation before the shoot was important.  The objects must be cleaned thoroughly to avoid dust or fingerprints.  Having a simple clean background is key.  "Colors are apt to clash with or detract from whatever you are photographing" (Harvey).  The blue background behind the collectable coin brought out the object more as opposed to plain white background.  The coin was held up with a piece of tape.

The blue part of the ring is slightly out of focus though the angle keeps it interesting.  You can make out the details on the earing.  The lighting should be brightened more on the earing.

The details are highlighted well on the coin.  There is much contrast with the background.  The ridges give a more interesting composition.  The copper color seems like its two different shades instead of one.

Summary

Overall, most of the images provided interesting angles and variety.  It helped to set the zoom out at max and bring the camera close to the object.  The image would be blurry using the zoom in function.  If the camera was extremely close to the object, the flash would auto-fire.  The lighting could be improved to magnify the colors especially on the jewelry.  The collectables shoot was challenging.  Some of the objects had trouble being set horizontally.  The coins were taped to the background.

Comments

  1. With image https://flic.kr/p/2kR6na1, I don't necessarily agree in that it is slightly out of focus it looks like a bad shot. What should you have done to brighten the background more? With image https://flic.kr/p/2kRauvp, I think I see tape above the cone and I question why you would not just stick tape on the back of the coin to hid the tape which would make the shot cleaner looking. Focus in most of the jewelry shots is still a problem, how can your resolve this? With the ring shots could you have found another way to stand or prop the ring with the tape less noticeable? Could the ring have been propped up against something or positioned another way? In your summary you mention the flash going off when close-up to an object. Can you turn the flash function off?
